Excavation Beyond the Driveway

Bring capable equipment into spaces that demand more care

Many backyard and side-yard projects are difficult because the work area is separated from the street by gates, fences, homes, sheds, gardens or finished landscaping. Tight-access excavation begins with understanding the entire travel route—not only the place that needs digging.

Gallant Services evaluates the narrowest opening, turns, slopes, overhead clearance, ground conditions and surfaces crossed along the way. We then determine whether compact equipment can reach the project area and what protective steps should be included.

Access determines feasibility. Send the narrowest measurements and photos from the street all the way to the work area for the most accurate initial assessment.

Help Us Assess Access

Five details to include with your quote request

Equipment dimensions vary, and width alone does not determine access. Clear photos and measurements help us identify constraints before arranging a site visit.

1. Narrowest WidthMeasure gates, gaps between buildings and every restricted point.
2. Overhead HeightShow wires, branches, eaves, decks and other overhead limits.
3. Turns & CornersPhotograph tight turns and measure available turning space.
4. Ground & SlopesShow steps, soft lawns, grades and changes in elevation.
5. Full Travel RouteSend photos from the street or trailer area to the exact work zone.
6. Material ExitExplain where soil, roots, concrete or debris must be moved.
Important: Do not remove fences or alter landscaping before access is confirmed. A site may have sufficient width but still be unsuitable because of turns, slope, overhead clearance, ground conditions or working room.
Property Protection

Careful planning from the curb to the work area

Compact equipment reduces the required footprint, but every route still needs thoughtful preparation.

01

Access Mapping

The route, narrow points, turns and overhead obstacles are reviewed before equipment enters.

02

Surface Awareness

Lawns, driveways, pavers and soft ground are considered when planning travel and material movement.

03

Controlled Work Zone

Working room, spoil placement and safe separation from people, pets and structures are defined.

04

Organized Cleanup

Material handling and site cleanup are completed according to the agreed project scope.

Our Process

From access check to completed excavation

The access route is treated as an essential part of the project, not an afterthought.

01

Send Measurements

Provide photos, the narrowest width, overhead clearance, route conditions and project details.

02

Site Assessment

We evaluate equipment access, working space, utilities, soil and material-handling needs.

03

Compact Excavation

Right-sized equipment completes the agreed digging, grading, removal or preparation work.

04

Exit & Cleanup

Tight-Access FAQs

Questions about fitting excavation into restricted spaces

Access is determined by the complete route and working area, not one measurement alone.

There is no single width that applies to every project because equipment and attachments vary. Turns, overhead clearance, slope, surface conditions and working room also matter. Send the narrowest measurements and photos of the complete route.

Some compact equipment may fit certain gates, but the gate is only one part of access. Posts, hinges, turns, eaves, utilities, trees and the available work zone must also be assessed before access is confirmed.

Any equipment and material movement can affect lawns, especially when soil is wet or soft. Ground conditions, travel frequency, machine type and protective measures influence the result. Expectations should be discussed during quoting.

Do not remove anything until the route has been reviewed. In some cases existing access is sufficient; in others temporary removal may be part of the plan. Responsibility for removal and reinstallation should be defined in the quote.

Suitable projects can include drainage trenches, grading, garden and pond digging, stump extraction, retaining-wall preparation, post holes and small-scale demolition. Feasibility depends on scope, access, soil and working room.

Material may be reused, stockpiled, moved with compact equipment or transported out in smaller loads. The route, quantity, soil type and disposal plan should be included in the project scope.

Pricing depends on the work itself plus access, travel route, material handling, equipment, soil, utilities and restoration needs. Send measurements, photos and project details for a site-specific quote.
